You know you are hooked when…

Yes…you know you are hooked when you are into it as much as I am.  My example…for a long time now, I have been carrying a cheaper (not cheap, just less expensive) pole and reel and a small divider box with just a few essentials in the trunk of my car.  This is only about a $40.00 setup, but I do keep it cleaned, oiled, and loaded with new line.  The little box is always restocked to make sure it is full when I need it.

This setup is for when I am just out driving and happen to come across a body of water that looks just right for fishing.  I will pull over and spend a few minutes there, just to try it…because you never know just when or where that 10-pound bass might bite.

There's not much bait selection in the tiny box…just some sinkers, a spinner bait or two, a couple of rooster tails, two small crankbaits, a few plastic worms, and the rigging needed, a couple of different sized swivels, a small bobber, and a few other things.

This is just a setup to try out a place I've sighted.  Then, if I think it deserves more attention, I'll mark it down on the map or mark a way point in the GPS unit (another good reason to get a handheld GPS), and return at a later time with all the proper gear!  If I need to get permission to fish it first, of course I will ask before I start.  Most places will have a sign that says "Private Property", "NO fishing", or "NO trespassing".

Now, if those signs are there then I abide by them, but I will go to the home and ask.  Sometimes that is all it takes and the owner will let you fish there.  They just don’t want kids there having beer parties, making a mess, or causing a fire.

This is just a habit I have picked up over the years, and it has brought a few great fishing places to my attention…ones that I can now go to over and over and catch quality fish.

See you out there, and remember…catch and release.  Let someone else get the same enjoyment of the catch…
