On a recent trip to Pike Island
Dam on the Ohio River, I got the chance to watch a few guys doing some
flathead fishing. I did not have my
rig with me, so I just watched and was there to talk and pass the time away. |

|
|
These guys were not catching
many cats…but the ones they did get were worth the wait. I watched as they pulled in a 35-pounder
and then a 28-pounder…not too bad for the middle of the day! |

|
They were using bluegills and
little channel cats (about 8 inches) for bait, rigged with two Gamakatsu
hooks (an 8/0 and the back one a 5/0).
They had both hooks on top of the baitfish, one right behind the top
fin and the back one right in front of the tailfin. |

|
They had the big rig poles and
reels…12 and 15 foot long poles to get out as far as they could, with 80
pound superline and—I am happy to say—Ambassadeur reels. One pole just had a bluegill on there,
with no other weight or float. The
rig with the channel cat had the big “Billy Bob" line-through float with
a stop knot at about 9 feet…that was the rig that got the 35-pound fish. To give you an idea of what the conditions
were that day, the water was lapping over the pier where they were standing. |

Now, like a dummy, I forgot that
I had my camera there with me until I was ready to leave. But I did snap some shots of the area they
were fishing and the water running through the dam… |
|
|
|
This is where I will test the
Okuma spinning reel, on some of those very flatheads. And I promise…I WILL have the camera there
and ready for the catch and release… |

|
Good luck, good fishing… |
