Boat Ramp Bullies
February 2003

This month I am going to talk about how I feel about “Boat Ramp Bullies"!

At some point in time everybody who has ever launched a boat has ran into one of these bullies.  These are the people that will take their sweet time putting the boat in the water…and even longer when they pull it out of the water.

I have been at ramps waiting for over an hour and I was only the 3rd guy back.  Some guy backs up and HAS to pull forward countless times so he can line the trailer up just right…even though it would have worked any of the first seventeen times he backed up.  Then, he gets out of the truck, unhooks his tie-down straps, checks the plug, makes sure everything is hooked up and THEN loads the boat with the tackle and rods and reels.  And all of this is stuff that needs to be done…but BEFORE you back down the ramp…!

And you know, this same person is the one who, when it is time to get the boat out of the water, will sit in his truck and impatiently hit the horn while he is waiting in line for the guy who is trying to only spending a few minutes at the ramp.  And then when his turn comes up, he is the guy I mentioned above, backing up so it is just perfect…for example, the same distance from ramp edge to trailer tire on both sides…then he backs in the water and has his fishing partner bring the boat up to the trailer…very, very slowly…then has him do it again because it is not perfect…and again...and again...

After getting the boat on the trailer, they pull out of the water just enough to have the lower unit out of the water, and then stops and shuts the truck off and goes back to unload the boat, empty the livewell, hook the tie-downs, lock the motor, etc…all the time sitting ON the ramp…and, of course, he will start to cuss you out if you honk a horn or say anything to him…

I know we have all went through this, but my question is:  How do we handle this type?  How have you handled this thing in the past?  Come on, send in your stories...with luck we will be able to post a few to help someone that just got a boat and will be running into this guy soon!

Smile and good fishing…
